Young Apprenticeships at Basingstoke College of Technology - From the Student’s Perspective...

These three Year 10 pupils are part of a cohort of 70 from 11 schools in Hampshire who have embarked on Young Apprenticeship (YA) Programmes.

Course: Retail Skills
School: The Vyne Community School
Ambition: Media Advertising

Why did you choose this course?
“It seemed a great opportunity to widen my experiences outside of school, I am interested in advertising products so thought that an understanding of the retail business would be helpful”.

What do you think of the facilities at BCOT?
“The new retail facilities include digital cameras and Wi Fi laptops which will be really useful for my BTEC First Diploma. I’m also looking forward to creating a display with the mannequins in the training shop window”.

Course: Automotive Skills

Ambition: Racing Team Technician

Why did you choose this course?
“I have a keen interest in cars and the way they work.  This course offers me the opportunity to widen my experience and the chance to do hands on work with cars”

What do you think of the facilities at BCOT?
“The facilities include a fully operational working garage and teaching workshops.  I am very much looking forward to working on the cars in the workshop.”

Ambition: Civil Engineer

Why did you choose this course?
“I am interested in how large structures are designed and built.  This course will develop my engineering knowledge and will help with my plans to become a civil engineer”.

 

 The YA students will study at BCOT for one day a week, while continuing to study towards their GCSEs at school and will also undertake 50 days of work placement. The qualifications they will achieve at college will amount to four or five GCSEs grade A* to C with qualification points of 230 for engineering and automotive and up to 220 for Retail.
